The Philosophy of Himalayan Layering
Trekking to Everest Base Camp (5,364m / 17,598ft) exposes your body to vast temperature fluctuations. In lower valleys like Phakding (2,610m), daytime sun can feel pleasantly warm at 18°C (64°F), while nighttime temperatures in Gorak Shep (5,164m) regularly plummet below -15°C (5°F). The secret to staying warm, dry, and mobile is a strict 3-tier modular layering system: 1. Base Layer (Moisture Regulation): 2–3 sets of 200–260 gsm Merino wool long-sleeve tops and leggings. Merino naturally resists odor across weeks without laundry and insulates even when damp. 2. Mid Layer (Thermal Trapping): A 100-weight microfleece plus an active synthetic breathable jacket (e.g. Polartec Alpha or Coreloft). 3. Outer Shell (Weather Resistance): Heavy-duty 3-layer Gore-Tex Pro hardshell jacket and waterproof rain pants with full side zips. 4. Expedition Down Jacket (Insulation Anchor): 800+ fill power goose down jacket with at least 250g of down fill. (Available for rent in Kathmandu for ~$2–3/day).Footwear & Ankle Protection
Your boots will make or break your expedition. Every blister at 4,000m feels twice as painful due to reduced oxygen delivery and slower cellular recovery. - Trekking Boots: B1-compatible or high-cut leather/synthetic boots with Vibram outsoles. Break them in with at least 50km of hiking before arriving in Nepal. - Teahouse Shoes: Ultralight down booties or slip-on running shoes for evening relaxation. - Trekking Socks: 4 pairs of medium-cushion Merino wool hiking socks and 1 pair of heavy mountaineering socks for summit day to Kala Patthar.High-Altitude Medical Essentials
- Diamox (Acetazolamide): 125mg or 250mg tablets for carbonic anhydrase inhibition (consult your travel doctor). - Water Treatment: Aquatabs chlorine dioxide tablets or a UV SteriPEN. Never drink untreated stream or tap water. - Electrolytes: Nuun or ORS packets to maintain cellular hydration at elevation. - Blister Care: Compeed hydrocolloid patches, zinc oxide tape, and alcohol wipes.Related Topics:#Everest#Gear Guide#Packing#High Altitude
